As part of our ongoing series, we are answering questions for Bridgette or Elsie to consider and respond to. This week’s question is about aspirations vs humility. Enjoy!
Dear Bridgette,
How can I both dream big and live a quiet and humble life for God?
Thanks for taking my question!
Well, well well. Perhaps the first fallacy to tackle is the notion that living with humility and holiness means to live a quiet, receding type of life. Maybe that true for some, but we are all made by God with a special purpose in mind and given certain gifts to accomplish that purpose. To achieve the life that God truly wants for us, we are continually in need of taking giant steps (leaps) out in faith, giving the glory to God (humility). And we’re asked to courageously share our faith with others…dragging as many people as possible to Heaven with us along the way. 😉
Yes, dream big! Act in courage. Nothing is too big for our God. And He LOVES IT when we trust Him to deliver. After all, the call that we receive from Christ will always go beyond what we can do in our own steam. That way, what we accomplish is not a source of personal pride, but to the glory of God. God’s presence is the game-changer. So if there are some dreams and plans that you’ve shelved or lessened because they just seemed too lofty, I encourage you to bring those to Jesus in prayer. Ask Him to increase your trust and willingness to step out in faith.
“What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” Micah 6:8.
On humility…can we begin to pursue a holy life without acknowledging our dependence on God? Embracing our dependence leads us to increasingly bend our self-will to the will of God. And we’ll be more willing to surrender control (or the illusion of control) if our trust in God’s love is greater than our desire to do things our way.
Look to the cross. God’s mercies never fail and we can live in freedom through grace. I think during Lent, its even more on our minds what it cost Jesus so that we can walk in that grace. We are all called to pursue holiness, that which is strengthened by humility and love. The sacrificial love of Christ held nothing back. That journey to becoming more like Christ means loving Him and letting that divine love of Christ pour into the lives of those around us. Let your love flow, ladies!
