Yes, that millennial darling, YouTube, offers some great tools for spiritual growth. We’ve established how a daily spiritual practice can enhance your initiative abilities, seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit within you. Sometimes, the old “close your eyes and ask for things” prayer just doesn’t get you there. You need to learn how to listen. This is one of those tools that I find lacking in our churches. It simply isn’t taught.
Enter technology!
Now is a great time to scroll through YouTube and see what type of spiritual prayers/meditations they can offer you. Some ideas to get you started.
1. Start in your own tradition.
If yogic chants are new to you, or chakra “cleansing” sends your eyebrows up, start with what you know. There are a few benefits to this. If you are like me, born in the Christian tradition, the terms and phrases used in the meditation will make sense. The mantras will resonate with you, and you will be able to quickly delve into the practice. If you start ambitious, with say a 20-minute loving-kindness meditation, you may fall off the wagon after a few short seconds, wondering what on earth you are doing. There is no wrong way, but if you start with something familiar, it can get you hooked in a good way!
2. Slowly branch out.
I know, I just told you to stick with what you know. However, after you’ve established your practice and have a routine, you may as well have fun with it. Start dabbling in what draws you, testing out different meditations offered by various traditions. One word of advice on this, always remember to ask for God’s protection whenever you begin any new meditation. I think it’s reasonable to ask for this, to set that intention and therefore know you are always safe. You are a very powerful spiritual being, and you should treat yourself like one!
3. Share.
The best thing about doing these meditations is sharing them with your friends, family, or the comments below. Don’t be sheepish on selecting ones you really resonate with. After initially rolling my eyes, I really started getting into mantras, “I belong here!” The point is, be honest with yourself and to share some of that vulnerability with people around you. God intended us to live in community. While that may be challenging right now, all the more reason to reach out.
Some videos below can get you started. These are the ones I personally have been trying out. Happy hunting!
